The Biosphere Reserve of Mont Ventoux was created in 1990. It covers 81 000 hectares and the number of inhabitants is near 26 000. Mont Ventoux (1909 meters altitude) is the highest point of Provence.

It is located directly between the Alpine massif to the north and the Mediterranean massifs to the south. The contrasted relief of this mountain generates a mosaic of microclimates and ecosysytems : all the Europe climates are represented, since mediterranean climate to Lapland climate. Only constant: the Mistral blows on average 130 days by year and can reach 250 Km/h at the top!

The floristic richness at the top of Mont Ventoux is home to exceptional floristic richness with over sixty species classified as rare. Around the summit there is a large variety of trees, in particular cedars of Lebanon, planted there in 1861, but also evergreen oak, beech and juniper. One counts more than thousand vegetable species ; many ones are rare or protected (Arctic plants, Mediterranean and African species).

The floral diversity in turn leads to a great variety of fauna with dozens of species nesting such as the goshawk; the lark Lullula arborea and the rock bunting. Accomodating for the mammals (moufflons, chamois), the Ventoux Mount is also recognized for its ornithological interest. To the south of Mont Ventoux, the Nesque Gorges are home to endangered plants such as the Martagon Lily and also reptiles like the viperine snake Natrix maura.

The reserve is involved in several general issues such as the compatibility between environment and agriculture - a problem approached in particular during the Journées du Développement Durable (Sustainable Development Workshop) organised in 1998.

To harmonize the local life, to manage the uses conflicts of the partners network and to make that rural territories becomes countries with growth, such is the challenge of a biosphere reserve. A Charter for the environment is signed between the Community of Communes of the Sault Country (Aurel, Monieux, Saint Christol d'Albion, Saint Trinit et Sault), the Community of Communes of Vallée du Toulourenc (Brantes, Saint Léger du Ventoux Savoillans) and the Commune of Lioux. The local communities delegated the control of this charter to the Syndicat Mixte d'Aménagement et d'Equipement du Mont Ventoux.
