Periodic review
ImprimerThe purpose of the periodic review is to ensure that Biosphere reserves continue to meet the criteria for designation and operation within the statutory framework. It is conducted every 10 years.
Activities are reviewed, which include both progress achieved and any difficulties encountered. It is also an opportunity to re-engage local stakeholders and to re-examine the project in response to new challenges. The Biosphere reserve’s zoning and its support framework are also evaluated, including the administrative authority, management committee, and scientific and education councils.
The periodic review may lead to the integration of new areas, introducing new stakeholders to the Biosphere reserve; in this case, it is not unlike the creation process.
In transboundary Biosphere reserves, the review is conducted in a coordinated manner in the countries concerned, based on the recommendations adopted in Pamplona (UNESCO, 2000). The cooperation plan (zoning, cooperation mechanism and plan) is also evaluated and renewed.
The periodic review process is conducted by the Biosphere reserves themselves and guided by MAB France.
