Creating a Reserve
ImprimerTo join the world network of Biosphere reserves, a region’s application must be submitted to UNESCO by the country in which it is situated. MAB France guides project leaders from candidate regions throughout the process of creating a new Biosphere reserve.
To obtain the designation, the site must satisfy criteria for eligibility within the statutory framework of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, in addition to the functions described in the Seville Strategy (UNESCO, 1995).
A local organization supports the application, and works towards implementing the proposal, in conjunction with MAB France. MAB provides guidance during the reflection stage, facilitates contact with other Biosphere reserves, and encourages the organization of study tours.
Representatives from MAB France may also speak at information meetings for local stakeholders, providing support for participatory initiatives, and facilitating co-construction sessions for the proposed Biosphere reserve.
Candidate Biosphere reserves are involved in the network’s activities, and are invited to attend meetings and working groups organized by MAB France.
Applications are forwarded to UNESCO only after evaluation by MAB France on a national level.
