Reconciling activities and the environment

Since adopting the Seville Strategy in 1995, UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere programme has had a clearly defined mission: to achieve balance between economic and social development, conservation of biodiversity, environmental education, and promotion of scientific research, while encouraging the participation of local inhabitants, on sites of excellence (Biosphere reserves). One of the major management challenges in these territories is thus reconciling economic activities and the maintenance or even improvement of the state of the environment.
